Samsung Electronics India announced on June 29 that the sales of Samsung’s in-house operating system Tizen-mounted smartphone Z1 which was released first in three South Asian countries, passed the 1-million mark.
Encouraged by the robust sales of the Z1, Samsung Electronics plans to release a follow-up model within this year, while accelerating efforts to establish a Tizen ecosystem by providing active support to promote the development Tizen apps.
The sales of the Z1 in three South Asian countries—India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka—surpassed the 1-million level on June 24. This milestone is achieved in five months after the model was released first in India on January 14.
Samsung added that the Z1 became the best-selling single model in India’s less-than US$100 smartphone market during the January-May period of this year.
Considering that the Indian smartphone market size is 120 million units, the 1-million sales are not impressive. However, given Android One smartphone which Google developed to target the less-than $100 smartphone market in India, was sold merely 800,000 units over the past eight months, it can be said that the Z1 has achieved meaningful results in India.
