Taihan Electric Wire said on July 28 that it won two ultra-high voltage cable orders worth US$27 million for two locations in California.
One $20-million project involves supplying 230-kV cables and connecting devices as well as construction while the other, worth $7 million, is to supply 138-kV cables. The latter project was commissioned by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power which has placed all its ultra-high voltage cable orders with Taihan Electric for six years since 2009.
In addition, the Korean company landed a turnkey project deal worth $7 million commissioned by Ausgrid, a state-run electricity infrastructure company, to supply and install 132-kV ultra-high voltage cables, as well as a long-term project to modernize electric power lines for Australia's three electric power companies. In addition to the three-year contract period, Taihan Electric may serve two additional years as an option.
Since moving into the Australian market for the first time in 2006, Taihan Electric Wire has accounted for more than 50 percent of the nation's ultra-high voltage cable market. In the United States, the company is quickly gaining the market share since landing a large-scale deal last year to supply 500-kV underground cables.
A company official said, "These are important milestones because electricity authorities in the United States and Australia demand very strict quality standards. We will try to cement our strong position in existing markets such as the Middle East while expanding toward new markets by offering customer friendly services."
