The main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) Party has decided to initiate an impeachment motion against Chong Jong-Sup, Minister of Government Administration and Home Affairs, who proposed a toast to the ruling Saenuri Party’s victory in the 2016 general elections during a dinner hosted by the Saenuri Party.
“We will file a motion of impeachment against Minister Chong Jong-Sup in order to let the public know that the head of the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs, which oversees the election process, violated the election law by making a politically biased remark,” the NPAD said on August 28.
Giving a toast at the dinner on August 25, Minister Chong reportedly asked the attendees to chorus ‘victory by any means’ following his chant of ‘General elections.’
In defense of the beleaguered minister, Kim Moo-sung, chairman of the ruling Saenuri Party, made a controversial comment, “Technically speaking, the subject of the sentence was missing. He didn’t exactly mention the “Saenuri Party.”
“We are also preparing a strong legal action against Choi Kyung Hwan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance, for making comments hinting at his involvement in the next general elections,” the NPAD said.
Deputy Prime Minister Choi has recently said: “I will accelerate economic growth to the mid 3% range next year, with a view to assisting the party (the Saenuri Party) in making preparations for the general elections,” The next generation elections are slated for April, 2016.
Meanwhile, the Saenuri Party had succeeded in passing a motion to impeach then President Roh Moo-hyun after he said that “I hope the Yeollin Uri Party will fare well in the general elections.”
