Hyundai Motor India’s No. 1 plant in Chennai has a 300-meter-long conveyor belt which churns out one unit of SUV Creta every 4 minutes. The Creta is a compact SUV which Hyundai Motor released last month.
The Creta was sold 6,783 units in India last month, emerging as the best-selling SUV model in India’s SUV market where as many as 23 models are competing. A Hyundai Motor official said, “If local consumers order a Creta now, they need to wait for about four months to take delivery.”
Key factors behind the robust sales of the Creta in India include the expansion of the SUV market in the country result from the fast expansion of the middle income households. India’s SUV market expanded to about 553,000 units last year, up 150 percent from 220,000 in 2006. Another factor is that the Creta is mounted with automatic transmission, which makes it almost unique among SUVs available in India.
