The 2016 Hyundai Tucson crossover and the 2016 Hyundai Sonata sedan have passed one of the industry's most rigorous tests of vehicle safety with flying colors, thus receiving the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)’s highest rating, Top Safety Pick +.
On September 24, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson crossover and the 2016 Hyundai Sonata were named two of the IIHS’s Top Safety Pick+.
To qualify for 2015 Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as a good or acceptable rating in the small overlap front test. To qualify for 2015 Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must meet the Top Safety Pick criteria, plus earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention, according to the IIHS.
The redesigned 2016 Tucson proved to be a great improvement on its predecessor, bringing its small-overlap crash rating from “Poor” to “Good.”
The 2016 Sonata’s small-overlap crash test score remained “Acceptable” though Hyundai made changes to the driver’s seatbelt and front suspension in order to receive a “Good” rating in the small-overlap test.
Instead, the Hyundai Sonata earned a Superior rating in the front crash prevention test, according to the IIHS.
