LG Display, one of the world's largest LCD panel maker, said Thursday it decided to invest 1.8 trillion won in building its OLED plant, called P10.
Earlier in August, the local display maker announced its plan to invest more than 10 trillion won in its large and flexible OLED and premium LCD by 2018. It decided to spend around 1 trillion won on its flexible 6th generation OLED assembly line at the plant in Gumi, the city exporting the largest amount in the nation.
Its 6th generation line, which can produce 7,500 sheets per month, is slated to go into mass production in the first half of 2017, according to the company.
Industry watchers said LG Display's white OLED technology has facilitated its massive investment with an aim of mass-producing the next generation OLED.
The white OLED technology, better known for its WRGB colors, enables the production of large OLED sheets, shedding conventional RGB colors, which can only produce small OLED sheets.
Experts said the expansion of OLED investment can be interpreted as LG Display’s willingness to take the lead in its large and flexible OLED market.
