Just as many imagined, Samsung and LG did it once again. IMID 2009 is now a display icon. Many global buyers found on the KES 2009 show-floor shared that they stopped over at IMID 2009 just to check out the latest display trends with Samsung and LG. Some gave comparisons, some noted contrasts. But is the display industry really all about stepping into the candy store of Samsung and LG to test out their newest flavors and witness fair competition between the two rivals

Up in the conference room, the in-depth presentations were given by international masters and experts to collect each piece of the display industry to put together as a whole. This year, a new subject of discussion joined: solar cells. "Although solar cells and displays are two different areas, the manufacturing process and scale of the two share similarity. Based on the common ground, not only the expansion of knowledge would take the place, but it could also spark up the fresh inspiration for both industries. We are seeking to join subjects like this in the future display seminars as well," said Dr. Kwon Oh-kyung, president-elect of the Korea Information Display Society.

Impression IMID 2009 Left

The key to the current success in Korean display industry was massive production.

President-elect Kwon Oh-kyung of the Korea Information Display Society
"We had an advantage of fast decision making process due to the plutocratic enterprises like Samsung and LG. As long as the single owner's vision met bravery, the intellectuals hopped on the express ride to make it happen. Next was the flexibility. When the factory machines say the maximum number of semiconductors it should produce is 30,000, we say push it to 60,000. Our challenging spirit has definitely helped to test the technical limits to meet our ambition and satisfaction, which often leads to fast development. Here the high rate of intellectual man power played a great role as well,"Dr. Kwon said.

The exhibition and the forum suggested that the future key lies in creativity. Dr. Kwon added,"All we have to add now is creativity. Killer applications could be everywhere we turn around. Picture the billboards in New York City. What if we could control all of the billboards in New York at once with a simple solution of total control system We could top our wireless technology on the high definition flat screens to start a new history of the billboards."

What IMID 2009 did not Show

"Display industry requires a visual technology that has currently occupied up to the fields of lightnings, digital cameras, and image chips. In the future, its territory can be reached as far as the field of artificial retina and electric power source,"Dr. Kwon continued, "The other side of the killer application I see is the e-textbook. By carrying a portable display, either flexible or flat, the students could lightly travel with the downloaded materials to learn. Display industry can also be connected to the construction industry. Why not use the entire wall as a display What about using the window as the display in the solar houses  The areas display could reach are beyond imagination."

What is Left as Homework

Some countries already have felt the necessity to build a share fabrication to create a global environment for future competition. Taiwan has an IT research Institute and Japan has quite a few within the country. Global companies are taking a bold step to build factories or research institutes in China. Korea soon too will cope with the government regulations to meet this trend and prepare a profitable structure for future trade between the countries in terms of taxes and distribution.
