The Genesis vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed into the flower bed in front of the entrance to the Dongrae District Office’s public service center

On Jan. 15, around 1 p.m., a Hyundai Genesis vehicle, driven by a man in his 70s, accelerated out of control and crashed into the Dongrae District Office in Busan. Police is now investigating whether the sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) was caused by driver error or mechanical or electrical problems.

The Genesis vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed into the flower bed in front of the entrance to the Dongrae District Office’s public service center. And then it stopped shortly and roared again before it came to a stop after hitting a wall.

The vehicle’s center high-mounted stop lamp (CHMSL) and rear brake lights all were flashing red. It means the driver was stepping on the brake pedal.

When both the brake and gas pedal are being pressed at the same time, the brake will override the accelerator because recently-released vehicles are equipped with a Brake Override System (BOS) (also known as smart pedals) to prevent driver error.

The Genesis driver claimed: “After I got my parking ticket, the brake didn’t work. My car stopped and accelerated out of control. This is an SUA incident.”

Police has launched an investigation into whether it was caused by driver error or not.
