To cultivate artificial intelligence technology, the Korean government plans to launch a large-scale R&D project with a budget of 30 billion won this year, while pursuing to establish an AI research center in which large companies would take part.
On January 27, the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning unveiled its business plan for 2016, which contains the development of such plans. AI is a technology that allows software programs or machines to analyze data and learn for themselves. This technology is used in a diverse range of areas, including smart cars, drones, and big data.
To advance the level of Korea’s AI technologies which are falling behind those of global companies like Google and IBM, the government is also driving forward with a plan to establish a private-led AI technology research center.
A government official said, “We are now in talks with large companies in these areas for their participation in building a research center. We will inject a budget of 30 billion won this year into the research center which will be responsible for R&D in AI software areas.”
