At GMV 2009, YongSoo Na, SVP of the Institute of Network Technology and CTO of SK Telecom, gave a detailed speech titled the Perspectives and Evolution of Mobile Broadband Network. The Mobile Broadband Network is constantly expanding, and continues to follow 4 common goals: broadband everywhere, connect everything, openness expansion, and IT & CT Convergence. After these goals are obtained, the network must transition into a more rapid and efficient network. In order to do this, the network must transition from coverage-centric deployment into capacity-centric deployment. Enhanced capabilities of this speed and efficiency will also be accelerated by the emerging devices in the B2B and B2C markets which include smart grids, enterprise mobility, mp3 players, and camcorders. Soon enough, all networks will become part of the 3G/4G networks.
SK Telecom will strive to meet the upgraded future using the acronym 5nGINE. These '5' areas that need growth are 'N'ext Generation, 'G'lobal de facto standard, 'I'nnovation, 'N'o-border(cross-industry convergence), and 'B'etter experience. Founded in 1984, SKT has operated nationwide CDMA, 1xEV-DO and WCDMA networks, but their main objective for the future is to transform these networks into a 4G network. Telecommunication has annually evolved from voice centric to data-based multimedia services and will further evolve to intelligent and cross-industry convergence services. This is classified as the 4G service, which features enhanced multimedia service and an enhanced industry productivity personalized service.
In the near future, SKT strives for enhanced industry productivity based on Smart ICT which includes areas of healthcare, finance, and logistics. To accomplish this feat, SKT must involve 4 necessary evolution trends. They need to transition from coverage-centric into capacity-centric network deployment, utilize various networks, enhance industry productivity and improve user convenience, and lastly offer various intelligence services that each provide QoS optimization. After they evolve their services into these trends, SKT will provide a rapid and efficient quality of service.
