Qualcomm MEMS Technologies Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), and LG Electronics Inc. (KSE: 066570.KS), a global leader and technology innovator in consumer electronics, today announced an agreement to begin the development of mirasol-enabled handsets.

As a leading handset manufacturer, LG has in-depth experience in bringing innovative technologies to handset designs. Under the agreement, Qualcomm MEMS Technologies and LG Electronics each commit resources to integrate mirasol displays into one or more LG handsets intended for commercial release.

“LG looks for innovations like Qualcomm’s mirasol display that can give us a competitive edge and differentiated user experience our customers have come to expect,” said DooWhan Sang, vice president of LG Electronics. “With the display’s low-power capabilities, LG can see how our customers could be able to take advantage of sophisticated mobile applications for longer periods of time and view it across a range of lighting environments.”

“There is a demand in the marketplace for mobile products that deliver compelling user experiences,” said Jim Cathey, vice president of business development for Qualcomm MEMS Technologies. “We look forward to working with LG Electronics to begin incorporating color mirasol displays in LG handsets. This collaboration signifies the commitment we have toward bringing products to market with LG.”

The nature-inspired mirasol display consumes significantly less power than other display technologies, extending handset battery life and enabling consumers to enjoy greater mobility. Based on reflective technology, Qualcomm`s mirasol displays harness ambient light to create color across a broad range of lighting conditions, including direct sunlight.
