LG Electronics joined hands with Intel in the area of the next-generation car telecom technology 5G-based telematics. The two companies plan to create synergies by combining LG’s auto parts technology with Intel’s wireless telecom platform technology.
At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016, which opened in Spain's Barcelona on February 22, the two parties announced a plan on how to cooperate in research and development of 5G telematics technologies.
Telematics refer to the next-generation car telecom technology which combines automotive technology with wireless communications. Telematics can be used to provide real-time traffic information to automobiles, while enabling emergency rescue or remote control diagnosis of the vehicles when a car breaks down or a car accident occurs.
5G telematics, once being developed, would enhance data transmission speed by 33 times compared to existing 4G LTE telematics. Until 5G telematics are commercialized, Intel plans to continue to provide support for LG’s related test and R&D platforms.
