There were about 500 Chinese smartphone brands two years ago but now that number has reduced to close to 100.

The 100 of Chinese brands are being squeezed out because the four top-selling Chinese brands are Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo and Vivo that sold over 45 percent of the domestic smartphone market last year.

“The competition is much faster and crueller than we expected” Ding Xiuhong, founder of smartphone start-up Dakele, said, "After internet giants are entering the market, one who can spend the most money can win the competition".

Under this circumstances, the top two Chinese brands Xiaomi and Huawei made disputes over who’s No. 1 smartphone maker in China.

According to the China Business News on March 9, Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, who is now attending the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, was asked about how he thinks about the rival Huawei during the press conference held on March 7.

He said, “Huawei is achieving relatively robust performance among China’s local smartphone companies. However, I feel offended when it says it is the best smartphone maker in China.”

He added, “We don’t care much about what ranks we are in the market. However, we can’t stand Huawei when it spills misleading information to consumers.”

In response, Huawei said, “We never said that we are the best smartphone supplier in China. We just delivered the result of surveys made by external research organizations.”
