The Seminar on Big Data Technology for NT-IT Convergence was held on Mar. 17 at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI)’s Seoul office, hosted by the Creative Economy Policy Forum and KISTI, organized by the National Nanotechnology Policy Center (NNPC) and the Forum: Big Data Future and sponsored by The Korea IT Times, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP), the National Information Society Agency (NIA) and the Korea Information Processing Society (KIPS).

The Seminar on Big Data Technology for NT-IT Convergence was arranged to spark in-depth discussions on ways to promote the convergence of nanotechnology and ICTs and was attended by 100 people from the government, industry and academia.

Kim Jae-shin, head of the National Nanotechnology Policy Center (NNPC), kicked off the seminar with an opening speech. Kim said: “The 4th industrial revolution will introduce ‘ultra-connectivity’ and ‘ultra-intelligence’ to our society, thus advancing the arrival of a new industrial age where production and services take place through systems connecting the virtual and physical worlds based on big data.”

On March 17, the Seminar on Big Data for NT-IT Convergence was held  at the Korea Institute of Science and KISTI’s Seoul office  with ICT experts in attendance.

Jung Yeon-tae, chairman of the Creative Economy Policy Forum, delivered a congratulatory speech. “As big data is called the crude oil or gold ore of the 21st century, big data is an indispensible tool for our advancement. Therefore, each sector has to tap into big data and efforts to apply big data technology to nanotechnology should be made to attain the government’s goal of making South Korea one of the world’s top three nanotechnology powerhouses.”

The Part I of the seminar was focused on new ways to utilize data for scientific decision making. Presentations were made on trends in the use of big data technology in implementing the government nantotechnology policy and ways to reinforce the competitiveness of manufacturing through big data.

Then followed a panel discussion. A heated discussion took place among Kang Hong-ryul (senior researcher at the Korea information Society Development Institute (KISDI)), Jang Dong-yong (head of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Technology Engineers), Park Sang-hyun (head of the IoT planning team at NIA) and Kim Hyoung Joong (professor at Korea University).

The Part II of the seminar revolved around big data-based platforms for computational science. Presentations were made on i) trends in supercomputing and computational science and ii) the importance of building a nanomaterials information platform for the design of nanoscale devices.

The presentations were followed by a panel discussion among Yang Jae-soo (chairman of the Gyeonggi Information Industry Association (GIIA), Cho Sung-kap (chairman of the Korean Association for Cyberethics) and Lee Kwang-ryul (researcher at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)).

One of the seminar attendees from industry said: “Presentations on actual cases of synergistic convergence among nanotechnology, IT, biotechnology, environmental technology, etc. were very informative. And I was impressed by the in-depth panel discussions seeking ways forward.”
