Tesla’s new electric car 'Model 3' is breaking sales records. Tesla Motors' CEO Elon Musk posted Sunday on his Twitter feed that worldwide orders for a new lower-priced electric car hit 276,000 during the weekend. Musk also said if the trend continues, orders will hit 500,000.
Tesla's new Model 3 is priced starting at $35,000 by Musk’s startup and had risen to 276,000 by the end of Saturday. The company started taking orders early Thursday before Musk unveiled the new car.
Musk also says in tweets that the company needs to build a factory in Europe to ramp up production. He says the car will be rear-wheel-drive with optional all-wheel-drive, and its steering controls will feel like a spaceship.
The new Model is less than half the cost of Tesla's previous models and its performance per price will be about double compare to its competitors such as BMW i3 and the Nissan Leaf.
Meanwhile, General Motors will start selling the Chevrolet Bolt electric car at the end of this year with a similar price and a 200-mile range.
