Samsung Electronics is pushing ahead with the development of smart contact lens, according to Forbes.
The news report recently said the lens, whose patents were registered in South Korea, have a small display unit at the center. The smart contact lens also have cameras, antennas and sensors, which detect movement, according to the news media outlet, citing SamMobile.
The cameras installed in the lens can control blinking of eyes, and its Wi-fi antenna enables the wearable devices to communicate with external devices such as smartphones and tablets to process data, Forbes said. This works in a similar way to how Google Glass users take photos with winks.
Why does Samsung try to develop smart lens instead of smart glasses The news report said this is because smart glasses have limitations in improving image quality based on the patent applications. Also, the smart lens are able to offer more natural experiences of augmented reality technologies than smart glasses.
Samsung is not the only company, which develops smart contact lens because Google already announced Google Contact Lens, which help people with diabetes to assess the glucose level in January of 2014. The lens are reportedly led by Alphabet's life-science team Verily. Although Samsung recently unveiled the patents of the smart contact lens, it applied for the patents in 2014, according to the news report.
