Ewha Womans University Medical Center (EUMC) held a ceremony on July 28 to launch a volunteer team committed to offering medical assistance to Uzbekistan.
The ceremony was attended by Kim Seung-cheol, Director of EUMC and Vice President of Ewha Womans University; Ryu Kyung-ha, Director of Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital; Kim Kyung-hyo, Dean of Ewha Womans University School of Medicine; and Oh Hye-suk, President of the College of Medicine Alumni Association.
The volunteer team left for Uzbekistan on an 8-day mission (August 2-9). Honoring the founding ethos of Ewha Womans University, i.e. ‘respect and sharing,’ the team will offer free medical checkups and care and deliver special lectures at a medical center located in Andijon.
Led by Seong Ju-myung, Professor of Internal Medicine (Hemato-Oncology), the volunteer team consists of 26 members including professors (such as Park Mi-hye, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kim Han-soo, Professor of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, and Ahn Jong-kyun, Professor of Pediatrics), fellows, nurses, dental hygienists, undergraduates, graduate school students and volunteers.
EUMC’s medical outreach program traces back to 1989 when EUMC’s volunteer team was dispatched to Nepal. Since then EUMC’s medical outreach program has expanded into Vietnam, Cambodia and Uzbekistan. Since 2007 EUMC has provided students with opportunities for volunteering abroad twice a year during school breaks. EUMC’s medical outreach program has grown in size under the auspices of Ewha Womans University and the College of Medicine Alumni Association.
