The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced their ' Computer Graphics (CG) industry growth plan' on January 14. Its' incentive is to overcome domestic market and advance towards the global market.
The movie, 'Haeundae' and 'National Team Player' are the most representative examples of Korea's triumph over CG technology. EON Digital Films orchestrated 'National Team Player' by solely utilizing local location, but made it seem to appear at German Ski jump World Cup Finals. Through VFX workshop, EON was appraised for making 3D matpainting, crowd simulation, and digital actor more than real by Hollywood movie industry. In addition, Korean drama, 'IRIS', was conducted by Bluerobot CG firm. 'IRIS' reached thirty percent ratings that signals Korea's CG growth and its' impact on Korean drama overall in the near future. There are approximately eight main CG enterprises in Korea: AZ Works, DTI, Insight Visual, Mopec Studio, EON, Macrograph, Next Visual Studio, and Footage.
CG has been a pillar in the image making process and its' success in the contents field, mushroomed to other achievements in various industries; thus CG has great potential for expansion. Korea's high-technology based CG have stimulated foreign CG market, in which developed countries (United States, Canada and Singapore) are trying to lure Korea's CG manufacturing technologies by pouring in capital and supporting tax benefits, and vice versa. Korea can increase its' source of income by twelve times more than the year of 2008, merely by obtaining 10 percent of Hollywood movies' CG market.
However, Korea's CG market has its' strength and weaknesses. Its' CG makes the most out of its' developed technology and has great quality compared to the time consumed. Also, its' technology is improving rapidly day by day. Nonetheless, it has poor software, authoring tools, and in-house technology. Not to mention, that it falls behind on Hollywood's success, the Korean government does not lend full support in its' CG market. Therefore, the Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism will reinforce foreign outsourcing by drawing on Hollywood's reduction policy on production cost and attend forums and meetings such as AFM (American Film Market) to attract foreign markets. In fact, seven domestic film companies joined AFM last November and discussed about conducting KRW113.9 billion worth of business.
To fully step up to the plate, local CG market will compose customized portfolio that complies with Hollywood's blockbuster movies and manufacture top movie scenes' Show Reel. It will, moreover, set goals on expanding and making an impact on the global market by focusing on research and development.
