According to Global Times, Google the world’s leading search engine has thrown down the gauntlet to China by saying it is no longer willing to censor search results on its Chinese service starting January 12. Google declared, "We will not continue to run our business under the Chinese government's regulations and supervisions, the government wants us to screen search results for Google.cn." Few multinational companies have taken such serious action against the government. The Chinese government has not commented about the issue yet. Nevertheless, the American government has expressed their attitude swiftly. Hillary, the U.S. Secretary of State stated, "America is waiting for China's explanation about this important and questionable case." Human right activists praise Google’s action. Computer World a news site about IT management stated, "Google took a true act of moral bravery and patriotic action."
The Chinese government has been under similar pressure from western public sentiments, but China has not given in to this ideological battle. Global Times has quoted an article from Mashable.com, which is American social news and social media guide, the article claimed, "It is not a big problem for China to shut down a multinational company, and besides Google is not the American government. It is impossible for Google to force Beijing to do something or not to do something. Even with Washington’s help it is very unluckily that Beijing will sway into Google’s favour.” If China wants to forbid Chinese search for something against the communist regime or obscene pictures, we have no way to stop it.
