People’s Daily Online, China

He Jia Zheng, Director of the Network Center of People's Daily and President of People's Daily Online, said, "The Google issue is actually one of America's global strategies. America had kept its superpower by military force and economic leverage. The superpower of the U.S., however, has been weakened through the global financial crisis and several wars on terrorism. That is why the American government has changed its game from military to online, using Google as a tool for its global political power. I cannot imagine that a multinational company wants to change local policies and interfere on local security matters without having a dark secret. Companies aim at making profit, but this time Google has aimed at something else."

He stated, "Foreign companies should respect local laws because it is basis etiquette. Of course local governments should also stick to their rules, and China monitors the Internet legally. Also, the Chinese government gives a lot of freedom to search engine companies and netizens. There are over 200 million blogs in China, the most in the world. Hundreds of millions people write their views, and debate with other people about issues on the Internet. Western countries criticize Chinese Internet censorship; however, they also filter information against themselves. Google, for example, has gotten rid of information regarding anti-America."

He Jia Zheng added, "Google is a very creative company and Google has its own vision of the future. If Google goes its own way as an enterprise, I believe they will achieve anything. I hope Google will not sacrifice itself for American imperialism."
