The two countries have explained their history differently, especially modern history. In the report, scholars from both countries agreed that the Second Sino-Japanese War, from 1937 to 1945, was a war of aggression. Thus, the massacre at Nanjing as left a deep scar on China.
Even Japanese scholars admitted that Japan invaded China in 1937, and there is still a wide gap between their recognition on their historical issues. The first step is for the two countries to deepen their mutual trust. Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada welcomed the report, saying, "Even if there may have been differences in views I think common understanding can gradually be nurtured by working on it."
