Small and medium sized ICT companies are calling for government support of Young Min You, Minister of Science and ICT.

At the “Intelligent Device Manufacturing Support Conference: In the Time of 5G,” held on 12th at the start-up campus in Bundang-gu, Seongman-si, Gyeonggi-do, ICT industry experts altogether voiced that “it is crucial to lower the entry barrier for 5G device development.”

The industry leaders unanimously agreed that the government must actively nurture the standardisation of5G device manufacturing and internet networks. In particular, Min Ki Yeo, Managing Director of AM Telecom, emphasized that it is vital to prioritise small and medium size business support as well as 5G-optimised network use.

AM Telecom, a developer of LTE module and emergency alert devices, will benefit from gaining accessibility to telecommunication’s mobile network, particularly in conducting device trials.

Mr. Yeo also added that favouring telecommunication giants in infrastructure support would inhibit small and medium sized companies to provide unique services.

Seong Chan Lee, Managing Director of vehicle accident-preventive device developer and start-up company Abadeu, shared the difficulties he had when developing in-house products.

He argued, “Small and medium sized businesses should equally receive support in critical technology distribution and competitive device components.”

Yong Sik Kim, Managing Director of CUDO Communication, expressed that “Although we develop devices and technologies, there are many legal barriers that hinder the device’s successful realisation in a 5G network.” “As the importance of algorithmic software is increasing, continuous revision of rules and regulations is essential.”

Meanwhile, Chung Won Park, Director of Korea Electronics Technology Institute, conceded, “It is true that the government has not been fully responsible for small and medium sized business technology standardisation.” He offered a policy alternative, a programme that standardises the public experience based expert technology, which is said to compensate the relatively weak technological competitiveness of small and medium sized businesses.

At the event, Minister Young Min You called fora network platform, which will be the foundation of a 5G ecosystem, to telecommunication company executives.

The minister emphasised, “The government is viewing 5G as a separate era, not as a stage in continuum with 2G, 3G,and 4G.” He continued, “A sense of crisis has been created, with the worry that South Korea may remain a 5G follower if the country does not open the market by March of next year.”
