SK Telecom and the Daegu Metropolitan City have joined hands to revitalize new energy industries through micro-grid technology.

SK Telecom (CEO Park Jeong-ho) announced on August 1st that it has been selected as the leading operator of Daegu Metropolitan City’s (Major Kwon Young-jin) ‘2nd Micro-grid system of Daegu National Industrial Complex’, and that it signed a contract with Daegu Techno Park on July 31st.

The Daegu National Industrial Complex block-type micro grid construction project aims to establish energy efficient systems by establishing a stand-alone power system called ‘Micro-grid’, and utilize this next-generation power grid to ultimately create energy self-reliance.

SK Telecom participated in the first construction project consortium in 2016 and built energy demand management type ESS (Energy Storage System), solar and geothermal fusion and composite distributed power generators, and comprehensive information centers. This resulted in an average power savings of more than 20% per company. Among them, ‘Techen’, an LED specialist, achieved the ‘zero energy factory’ achievement of zero electricity cost.

The second phase of the project, which will be carried out this year, will invest a total of 11.3 million dollars (5.36 million dollars on government expenditures, 714,628 thousand dollars on municipal expenses, and 5.3 million dollars on private investments) over the next five months to provide energy demand management of 7.5MWh ESS and 3MW capacities, and a micro-grid energy management system.

In particular, the Daegu National Industrial Complex is the first in South Korea to apply the micro-grid to national industrial complexes. Furthermore, SK Telecom is expected to lead the market with its competitiveness ahead of the nationwide expansion of energy efficiency business.

To this end, SK Telecom plans to continuously upgrade its technology to optimize the production, storage, and consumption of energy by analyzing data gathered in the micro-grid energy management system.

“We will continue to expand core energy efficiency projects in the smart city era through SK Telecom’s differentiated ICT capabilities,” said Kim Seong-han, SK Telecom’s Smart City Unit Chief.
