Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) announced on November 28 that it signed a $5.3 million GIS-based power management system deal with the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) in Takah, Bangladesh.

About 10 officials of the local government, including Sayeed Akram, the head of the BPDB attended the ceremony.

For the next 18 months, KEPCO is planning to establish a GIS operating system, develop DB, establish a master plan for distribution facilities, and train in four cities including Chittagong.

Bangladesh is facing a sharp increase in electricity use per capita, with an average annual economic growth of more than 6 percent, but it lacks electricity supply and electricity infrastructure.

KEPCO expects to solve these problems by digitizing various geospatial information and controlling power facilities. It is also expected to significantly increase the profitability and operational efficiency of BPDB.

"KEPCO carried out a total of five power infrastructure projects, including consulting in Bangladesh in 2008,," said Kang Myung-koo, director of KEPCO`s new business development department. "This project will bring the excellence of the KEPCO GIS model to overseas markets."
