More than 100,000 people signed up online for the nationwide signature-collecting campaign against the government's nuclear phase-out policy and for the resumption of the construction of the Shin Hanul 3-4 nuclear reactors.

"The number of signatures surpassed 100,000 in 226 hours for less than 10 days since the launch of the campaign on Dec. 13," the pan-national signature-collecting campaign headquarters said on Dec. 23.

The signatures were active in Seoul, Daejeon, Sejong, North Gyeongsang Province, Ulsan, Daegu, Busan, South Gyeongsang Province and Gyeonggi Province. The organization estimated that the number of signatures would be much higher if it adds what they received in person on the spot as the 100,000 people signed up just online.

The signature-collecting campaign headquarters called the campaign the "White Vest Movement." "Through the campaign, I was able to confirm the public's intention strongly opposing the government's nuclear phase-out policy," said Rep. Choi Yeon-hye of the opposition Liberty Korea Party, who is the co-chairman of the campaign committee.

She said that the signature collection campaign will go on until the Moon Jae-in government  gives up the policy".

"Although 70 percent of the public agreed to maintain and expand nuclear power plants in two surveys, the government has closed its eyes and ears and turned a blind eye to the public's voice," the headquarters said, adding that the first step in protecting the nation's nuclear power industry is to resume the construction of the Shin Hanul 3-4 nuclear reactors.
