As Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME)'s subcontractors recently died in a fall while working, the labor group urged the government to come up with measures to prevent recurrence of such accidents.

The DSME branch of the Metal Union held a press conference in front of Geoje City Hall on Jan. 29 and claimed that the subcontractors' falling accidents occurred frequently owing to the DSME's lax safety management system.

Noting that there has been a series of accidents involving subcontractors for three consecutive years in DSME, the union demanded measures to prevent recurrence of such accidents.

"The most responsible DSME is blaming individual workers for the disaster occurrence. If this trend continues, the death of the subcontracting workers will not stop," the union said.

They called for thorough investigation of the accident, measures to prevent recurrence, punishment of those responsible, and legislation of the National Assembly's corporate murder law.

Meanwhile, at 11:20 a.m. on Jan. 25, a 42-year-old subcontractor was found dead in a fall in the DSME oil tanker.
