Samsung Galaxy Fold

Samsung Electronics' Galaxy fold has been sued by Uniloc, a global patent monster, following controversy over device defects.

On April 29, Samsung Electronics said that its patent management finance company, Uniloc, filed a patent infringement suit with a Texas District Court on April 16 against the latest Galaxy series products, including the Galaxy fold and the Galaxy S10 5G.

U.S.-based Uniloc is a well-known NPE in the IT industry, including electronics and mobile devices, and is the place to file 52 lawsuits against Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics in 2018 alone.

NPE usually raises patent infringement lawsuits against companies after purchasing patents from individuals or companies and makes profits by collecting royalties. Uniloc is reportedly making huge profits through patent rights suits against not only Korean companies but also global companies such as Apple.

The parts Uniloc claims to have infringed patents from Samsung Electronics are "Android Beam Transmit and Receive (ABTR)" and "wireless network communications (WNC)." ABTR sends and receives pictures and videos using Android Beam. WNC is a function that allows data to be shared without wires connected.

It is heard that Samsung Electronics is going to take stern action against Uniloc since it has been carrying out patent infringement lawsuits in the past.

However, the process of Samsung Electronics preparing for the lawsuit is not expected to be that easy. This is because devices that are included in a patent infringement list are about 70 Galaxy products that have already been released such as Galaxy folds, Galaxy S10 series, S9 and S7.

Meanwhile, Uniloc also filed a lawsuit against LG Electronics for infringing on its Bluetooth patents, and the court ruled in part that LG Electronics won this month.
