Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction signed an MOU with the U.S.-based nuclear power company NuScale Power in Washington D.C. on April 29 (local time) for cooperation in small modular reactors (SMR) project.

NuScale Power, a small nuclear power plant operator, is currently developing small module nuclear power plants with support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The company will supply small-sized module nuclear power plants to the first small-sized nuclear power plant project to be built in the U.S. by power generator UAMPS in 2026 with the aim of commercial operation.

NuScale Power's small-sized module nuclear power plant is an integral part of the reactor container, which is 4.5 meters in diameter and 23 meters in height, all of which are key devices of nuclear power plants, steam generators, pressurizers and main runs. No separate containment is required with designs that enclose and protect these reactor containers. The latest nuclear power plant to be built by UAMPS is a 720MW class with 12 modules.

Through the MOU, Doosan Heavy will review the design and manufacture of NuScale Power's small module nuclear power plant, and supply reactor modules, a key instrument in the UAMPS nuclear power plant project.

"We will successfully supply core equipment to small module nuclear power plants to be built for the first time in the U.S. by utilizing our technologies and experiences in the nuclear power field," said a Doosan official.

Meanwhile, Doosan Heavy supplied 32 nuclear reactors and 114 steam generators to South Korea, China and the UAE, including main equipments of the Vogtle nuclear power plants No. 3-4, which are under construction in the United States.
