Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (Doosan Heavy) said on May 13 that its two technology projects were selected by the U.S. Department of Energy under the theme of "Coal-Based Power Plants of the Future."
The U.S. Department of Energy launched the initial public offering to explore ways to transform coal-fired power generation into a next generation power generation facility, a supplement to renewable energy. A total of 240 GW coal-fired power plants are currently in operation in the U.S.
Doosan Heavy has passed two technology tasks -- a "Coal, Gas and ESS Hybrid Power System" and a "Gasification Hybrid Clean Power Generation System."
In its first task, "Coal, Gas and ESS Hybrid Generation System," it reduced the power generation technology of 1,000MW Ultra Super Critical (USC) to 250MW, which is applied to Gas Turbine. The second task, the "gasification hybrid clean power system," is to make coal gas and separate it into hydrogen and carbon dioxide, and then use hydrogen to generate fuel cell power and capture carbon dioxide.
The selected technologies and subjects were highly praised for presenting new remodeling models for old coal-fired power plants based on the original technologies held by Doosan Heavy.
"It is significant in that we have been recognized for our capabilities and technologies in the U.S.," said Song Yong-jin, head of Doosan`s strategy and innovation division.
Under the selection of the technology agenda, Doosan Heavy plans to complete the demonstration by 2030 after conceptual design and feasibility studies on each task under the U.S. Department of Energy's budget.
