Hyundai Engineering said on July 23 that it has won the order for the Guam Dededo 200-MW combined thermal power plant worth $534 million (about 630 billion won).

The project calls for the construction of a 200-MW combined thermal power plant near the Dededo area, located about 5 kilometers northwest of Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport in Guam. The construction period is 30 months.

Hyundai Engineering has succeeded in winning the contract for a combined thermal power plant for the first time in Guam, a U.S. territory, leaving Southeast Asia, a stronghold for Korean construction companies to win orders for power plants. It proved its technological prowess in building power plants at world-class levels and showed that its market diversification strategy has paid off.

As most of power plants in Guam are diesel power ones that were completed in the 1970s and 1990s, and their durability is to be nearly completed, Guam is in dire need of alternative power plants. Accordingly, the project is expected to replace aging power plants and provide stable and economic power supplies to all areas of Guam.

"We will do our best to successfully complete the project for the combined thermal power plant in Guam so that it will become a cornerstone for us to enter the power plant market of advanced countries in earnest," a Hyundai Engineering official said.
