Kim Nam-seung, a 45-year-old executive director of Samsung Electronics' memory business division, has all been listed on the "Hall of Fame" of the world's top three computer science societies. Kim is the first person in Korea to dominate these academic societies.
Samsung Electronics announced on July 29 that Kim was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA).
Kim, a graduate from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), was hired by Samsung Electronics in May last year after working as a computer engineering professor at the University of Illinois.
Previously, Kim was elected into the Hall of Fame by the International Symposium on High Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA) in 2015, and the International Symposium on Microarchitecture (MICRO) in 2016.
ISCA, HPCA, MICRO are regarded as the world's top three computer societies. In the past 50 years, only about 20 people have been named to the Hall of Fame of all three major academic societies in the world.
Among those who have listed at least eight papers at each society, researchers who have written papers that are highly technical and influential will be put on the Hall of Fame.
Kim is currently researching next-generation memory semiconductors that can be applied in AI (Artificial Intelligence) field. "The 1997 overseas training program in the western U.S. supported by Samsung Electronics changed the perspective of my life by 180 degrees," he said. "Since I have conducted meaningful joint research with great researchers in the course of studying in the U.S., I have been able to come to this day."
