Among imported cars, BMW topped the list
Rep. Shin Chang-hyun of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea

Hyundai Motor has the largest number of car recalls over the past five years, the report showed.

According to the "2014-2019 auto recall status" submitted by Rep. Shin Chang-hyun of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea based on the data of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Hyundai Motor has the largest number of cars recalled in South Korea over the past five years with 2,739,241.

It was followed by Kia Motors with 1,119,547 units, Renault Samsung Motors with 944,277 units and Chevrolet with 895,697 units.

Among imported car brands, BMW topped the list with 746,103 units. Audi had 315,115 units and Mercedes-Benz had 275,948 units. The number of recalls in Japanese brands was followed by Honda with 147,727 and Toyota with 118,948 units.

By vehicle, a total of 510,265 units of Hyundai Motor's NF Sonata were recalled due to the prolonged inflow of oil or moisture into the power supply parts of ABS and VDC modules. 405,018 units of the Grandeur TG were also recalled for the same reason.

The number of recalls with a zero percent correction rate also reached 291. Kia Motors's K5 (TF) has been recalled 3,890 units due to possible leakage due to the lack of air tightness in the high-pressure fuel pipe connection, but has not corrected a single one.

The Volkswagen Passat has been recalled 1,269 units due to safety concerns over airbags, but has not corrected a single one either.

"It is consumers who suffer damage as the revision of the car management law is delayed in the National Assembly," Shin said, adding, "It is urgent to strengthen responsibility for punitive damages following the delay of the recall."
