Merck Korea (Managing & Representative Director: Glenn Young), the Korean subsidiary of Merck, a leading science and technology company, held an award ceremony for the winners of this year’s “Merck Award” and “Merck Young Scientists Award” during the International Meeting of Information Displays (IMID) 2019 at Hwabaek International Convention Center (HICO) in Gyeongju on August 29.

Glenn Young emphasized “Merck has been present in Korea for 30 years and during this time we have seen the Electronics Industry flourish. This industry, particularly in the Semiconductor and Display fields continues to evolve rapidly on a global basis as demand for digital devices and technology grows. At Merck we have a strong interest in both internal innovation efforts and fostering fundamental research that contributes to technological advancement related to and beyond our business in Performance materials, Healthcare and Life science. To celebrate 16 years of the Merck awards in Korea Merck held an Awardee Network event, bringing together many of the award recipients.

To recognize outstanding scientific contributions in display technologies, the Merck Award was established at IMID 2004 organized by the Korean Information Display Society (KIDS), while celebrating the 100th anniversary of Merck’s liquid crystal research. In 2006, the scope of Merck Award was expanded to create the Merck Young Scientists Award. A further change was made in 2013 for the 10th year of the awards when of the Merck award scope was updated to recognize Applied research that directly contributes to advancement of commercial display production.

The 16th Merck Award went to Prof. Jang Hyuk Kwon (Kyung Hee University), for Fundamental research and applied OLED technology development over the past 20 years. He contributed to initiating localization of commercialization of the LCD colour filter in Korea and to the production of AMOLED for the first time in the world in 2007. He contributed greatly to the development of AMOLED display technology with the development of a top emission OLED structure for AMOLED displays. He said “I am very glad and honoured to receive the Merck Award. I sincerely thank all those in the display industry and academia who have helped me to complete these excellent research achievements so far. I will continue to make efforts to ensure that the new flexible wearable display era will come soon.”

The winner of this year’s Merck Young Scientists Award is Prof. Jong Hee Lee (Hanbat National University) who has performed research in various important fields such as light out-coupling technology that reduces power consumption by increasing the light efficiency, working on solving the wide viewing angle problem of OLED display; polymeric conducting electrode development and solution-based printing for OLEDs. He has contributed to the academia, research, and development of industry in broad research areas such as chemical materials and components, devices, panels and optical simulation. He said “I am honoured and delighted to receive the Merck Young Scientist Award. I will continue to make efforts to open up a brighter future with display related technology.”

In Korea, Merck invested €11 million to establish the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) inaugurated in May 2010 with the aim to provide advanced reliable quality products to the rapidly-growing electronic & display market. The OLED Application Development Laboratory (ADL) was inaugurated in October 2011, and the OLED Application Center (OAC) was inaugurated in May 2015.
