The country's 26th nuclear power plant, the Shin-Gori No. 4, has begun commercial operations.

According to the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) on Sept. 2, the Shin-Gori No. 4 reactor located in Ulju-gun, Ulsan, began commercial operation on Aug. 29 after completing a seven-month trial run that began in February.

The KHNP also held a ceremony to mark the commercial operation of the Shin-Gori No. 4 at its main control center.

The Shin-Kori No. 4 reactor has been adopted the new-type pressurized light water reactor (APR1400). It is the same reactor type as the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, which was exported to the United Arab Emirates. Compared to previous models, it has greatly increased safety, economic feasibility and convenience. The design life is 60 years.

The capacity of facilities is 1.4 million kilowatts, the largest in South Korea. It is capable of producing 10.4 billion kWh of electricity, which is equivalent to 11.5 percent of last year's electricity sales in Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang Province.

The construction of the Shin-Gori No. 4 reactor began in September 2007 and was virtually completed in August 2017 after completing physical construction in 10 years.

Since then, it has received an operational permit from the Nuclear Safety Commission in February this year and has started a test-drive after loading fuels.

There was no single fault stop during the seven months of the commissioning period. Previously, the Shin-Gori No. 3 reactor, which is the same type, has also been operated without failure for 389 days.

"We will make efforts to make good results in overseas markets in the future by operating the Shin-Gori No. 3 -4 reactor more safely," said KHNP President Chung Jae-hoon.
