The fine has been finalized for the Mercedes-Benz Korea, which imported vehicles without abiding by the certification process for car emissions.
On Sept. 9, the Supreme Court upheld the original ruling that fined the Mercedes-Benz Korea 2.73 billion won for violating the "Atmospheric Environment Conservation Act and the Customs Act."
Mercedes-Benz Korea was previously indicted on charges of bringing in some 7,000 vehicles in the country equipped with emission-related parts that have not been certified for change by the Ministry of Environment.
The first trial handed down a fine of 2.8 billion won, claiming that Kim violated the atmospheric environment conservation law and the customs law, and sentenced him to eight months in prison before being arrested in court.
On the other hand, the second court fined some 2.7 billion won, saying, "It is difficult to conclude that some models were ignored or neglected the certification procedure in the course of the import process."
In response, Mercedes-Benz Korea said, "It was regrettable that our opinion was not accepted, but that it would humbly accept the judgment of the Korean court."
