Hyundai Rotem won an additional project in the U.S. market for the first time in nine years, setting the stage for a re-launch of its business there.

Hyundai Rotem said on Oct. 1 that it has won a contract to supply 80 second-floor passenger cars ordered from Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). The amount is 334.1 billion won.

The project is the additional volume of the 75 second-floor passenger cars project which Hyundai Rotem won in 2008. The delivery will start from 2022 and be finished by 2024. All vehicles are produced at the Changwon plant.

Hyundai Rotem was able to win the bid for the project because it proved its quality of vehicles and business capability through the previous 75 passenger cars project in Boston.

Hyundai Rotem won an additional project in the U.S. market for the first time in nine years after winning an order for 66 cars of the Denver train in 2010, paving the way for a re-launch and strengthening its position.

Hyundai Rotem also plans to consider participating in the bid for the two-story passenger car project, which is expected to receive additional orders from MBTA around 2020.

In particular, Hyundai Rotem won the bid for 80 second-floor passenger cars in Boston this time, surpassing 1,000 cars in the accumulated orders for U.S. rail vehicles since it entered the market in 1980 with the receipt of orders for 452 units of freight cars.

"By winning this project, we have strengthened our position in the U.S. market and laid the foundation for additional orders," said a representative for Hyundai Rotem.
