SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won stressed that the global economy and order are threatened by geopolitical instability and rapid technological change, and that global joint action and innovation are needed in response.

Chairman Chey made the remarks in his opening speech at the Beijing Forum 2019 held in Beijing on Nov. 1 to 3. The Beijing Forum, which marks its 16th anniversary this year, is an international academic forum hosted by Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies (KFAS) along with Beijing University, while Chey attended the event as the foundation's chairman.

"In addition to long-standing problems such as terrorism, poverty and environmental pollution, we are facing two new challenges: deepening geopolitical instability and drastic scientific innovation and technological change, Chey diagnosed.
"Many geopolitical issues, including the U.S.-China trade conflict, are creating unprecedented risks and such instability threatens the global economy, social safety and world order," Chey said.

"The rapid changes in high-tech technologies such as social media, artificial intelligence, and machine running are creating new problems for mankind as well," he said, adding, "As an alternative to this, we should exercise collective intelligence at the global level and act jointly, while making bold challenges and innovations."

As part of that effort, he explained, "SK is working to create social value. SK generated $15 billion worth of social value while earning $28 billion in pre-tax profits last year. Although the measurement process is not complete and 53 cents per dollar is not enough, we will continue our efforts to improve it."
