Seoul Semiconductor received a total of 10.5 million won in fines and 30 million won in penalty for violating nuclear safety laws caused by radiation exposure related to workplace accidents.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission held the 112th meeting at the KT building in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, on Dec. 24 and approved the administrative disposition plan for Seoul Semiconductor.

In July, an employeesof a service company worked at Seoul Semiconductor opened door after releasing the safety device, causing seven people to be exposed to radiation. Two out of seven people have confirmed abnormalities in hands such as erythema, pain and fever.

After receiving a report on the accident, the commission conducted further investigations into past radiation workers and the same and similar equipment use agencies until Nov. 27. As a result, it identified two employees who claimed to use radiation generating devices that were against the regulations.

It concluded that Seoul Semiconductor has violated the nuclear safety act, given that it had been used without lifting and closing the safeguards of radiation generating devices, and that it had not taken steps to lower the exposure dose of workers. They are subject to fines of 4.5 million won and 6 million won, respectively.

It was also found that the site for the use of radiation-generating devices was relocated and the device was changed, but did not report it to the committee. In addition, the compensation criteria excluded employees belonging to the service provider from radiation workers. In response, the commission imposed 30 million won in fines.
