Coupang said on Dec. 30 that it will build a logistics center equivalent to 46 soccer stadiums (about 100,000 pyong) in size in the national industrial complex in Dalseong County, Daegu.
It is the largest Coupang logistics center and aims to be completed in 2021. Total investment costs amount to about 320 billion won.
Later in the day, Coupang held a groundbreaking ceremony for the logistics center with Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin, Rep. Choo Kyung-ho (Daegu Dalseong-gun) and Coupang CEO Kim Beom-seok attending at the site of the Daegu national industrial complex.
Previously, Coupang signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Daegu City in November 2015 to build an "eco-friendly and advanced logistics center." It later decided to build a mega logistics center by 2021 after discussions with the city, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The Coupang Daegu logistics center is the main hub of the company's plan to build a nationwide logistics system for rocket delivery, which will encompass the Yeongnam, Chungcheong and Honam regions.
It also plans to reduce the burden on workers and increase efficiency through next-generation logistics and delivery systems using artificial intelligence, optimization of shipping lanes and eco-friendly logistics equipment.
A Coupang official said that once the Daegu logistics center is completed, the speed of rocket delivery in Daegu and the Gyeongsang provinces will be faster.
“In the future, Coupang will continue to invest to create jobs and strive to help the local economy,” CEO Kim said.
