In early April 2010 when LG Group announced their Green Gadget investment plan they also made statements about carbon reduction plans. LG's plan was 'to invest 20 trillion won (£11.5bn) by 2020 in the development of environmentally-friendly products and cut its greenhouse gas emissions 40 per cent against 2009 levels by the end of the decade.
In fact, in early June 2010, LG Electronics' Eco Strategy Team released their 2010 Environmental Report Summary. In the summary LG Electronics showed their two-pronged approach to carbon reduction. The first approach is to reduce emissions from their manufacturing process. From 2008-2009 LG Electronics, in the report, stated that they 'reduced 250,000 tonnes from the manufacturing stage...and about 5,400,000 tonnes from customer's use in products, as compared to 2007.'
The different comparison periods likely reflect the newness of the completer initiation of Green Growth strategies within most industries. Also, LG Electronics have been 'promoting the establishment of greenhouse gas inventories for domestic and overseas sites,' and they participate with the international Carbon Disclosure Project [CDP].
The accounting procedures for reductions and improvements, since Korea IT Times was given a prospectus for the LG Environmental Summary, are also subject to independant measures of improvement in Korea and for products, international.
All companies wanting to measure improvements or report back on effectiveness face concept problems that even those deciding United Nations policy are not immune from. LG Electronics have come a long way from 2007 proclamations of company emissions savings in Cheongju based on employee's personal carbon reduction activities such as riding their bikes to work, to their own customisable methods for measurement for processes and products. LG Electronics do still, however, promote a low carbon culture.
