Samsung Heavy Industries has won a 361.1 billion won order to build three shuttle tankers. Samsung Heavy Industries announced on March 2 that it has signed a contract to build three Suez Max-class shuttle tankers with its Asian owner. These vessels are scheduled to be delivered sequentially by July 2022.

The shuttle tanker is a vessel that serves to ship crude oil produced by a marine plant at sea and transport it to land storage bases. High value-added systems such as a high-tech dynamic positioning system is installed to maintain a certain position at sea affected by high waves and wind and to allow stable connection to offshore plant facilities.

Samsung Heavy Industries started building shuttle tankers in 1995 for the first time in the Korean shipbuilding industry. It has maintained its No. 1 position in the world with its most shipbuilding experience and high-quality competitiveness, with 45 percent of the global market share (64 out of 143 ships) so far, including this contract.

"We will further reduce the operational costs of ships by utilizing smart technologies and strengthen our market dominance by applying eco-friendly solutions tailored to environmental regulations," a Samsung Heavy Industries official said.

Meanwhile, Samsung Heavy Industries set its order target for this year at $8.4 billion, up 18 percent from last year's $7.1 billion.
