Regarding the voluntary agreement on reduction of promotional packing materials, which was made with 64 manufacturers and distributors in 2008, the Ministry of Environment analyzed the outcome and found that the volume of promotional packing material decreased from 6,618tonnes in 2007 to 5,842tonnes in 2009.
In other words, about 780 tonnes of packing materials reduced, which amounts to KRW 3.5billion.
Promotional packing materials are those which are unnecessarily added to a product in an attempt to promote purchase. Packing material for 'buy-one-get-one-free' promotion is an example.
Companies said they provided about one billion won of green mileage for customers when they purchase non-promotional products.
As packing materials reduction leads to cost reduction for companies and accumulation of mileage for customers, the Ministry of Environment plans to extend the green mileage point system.
