Similar in effect to very ancient Indo-European beliefs and a symbol well known in many parts of the world, the tree-of-souls in Avatar stood for the hope of the Na'vi.  How does the Avatar tree-of-souls stack up as a piece of 'Green tech'

It's a valid question, that which has been fiction sometimes becomes fact.  In the 1950s humans were watching a man dressed as a robot and people landing on other planets on television and within 20 years it happened.  We are also, in fact, getting closer to a minority report screen, even though it is more of a public relations product than a bread and butter product for those companies able to manufacture such wonders.  Some things from people's extraordinary imaginations, of course, we hope do not happen.

Some weeks ago, KIT published an article on differing facets of being a 'Green Tech' Consumer,  in which the following aspects for making purchasing decisions were explained by expert on 'why consumers buy green,' Diego Alfonso Vazquez of Cardiff University. Then we rated the iPad in the midst of manufacturing partner media attention and the whole time we pondered, what would a Green Technology that met all of the 'Green Tech' consumer demands, actually look like.

Here is a view of the tree-of-souls in that light...

The aspects that we choose from to identify with when making purchasing decisions, were said previously to be: Organic, fair trade, not packaged, seasonal, natural/recycled, energy efficient and sustainable.  Interpreted in the context of the tree-of-souls with a rating of Very much so, Neutral or Not at all.

  • Organic = Very Much So, The tree-of-souls is a tree.
  • Fair trade = Very Much So, It seems viable that the Na'vi had trade with neighboring tribes and all participated at multiple tree-of-souls events.
  • Not packaged = Very Much So, The tree-of-souls and accompanying activities were not packaged into anything, nought tourism, in the Na'vi context in the movie
  • Seasonal = Very Much So, self explanatory.
  • Natural/recycled = Very Much So, As far as other movie methods of contacting ancestors are concerned, such as the polluting Delorian in Back to the Future that could go back in time, the tree-of-souls looks to have less carbon emissions.
  • Energy efficient/sustainable= Very Much So, given that the tree-of-souls is a tree, it likely photosynthesizes and assists with Na'vi reduction of tribal carbon footprints.

Totals:

Not at all = 0

Neutral = 0

Very Much So = 5

There it is, the tree-of-souls is perfect 'Green Tech,' and now might also stand for the hope of 'Green Tech' as well as the Na'vi.  Now all is needed is a tech conglomerate willing to take it on as a public relations research area :)
