Hyundai Heavy Industries Ulsan Factory

A 50-year-old worker, identified only by his surname Chung, died after being caught in a large door during the painting process at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI)' Ulsan plant on April 21. HHI has had three major accidents, including this one, this year alone.

Chung died of a skull rupture when his head got stuck in the large door of the factory while he was painting the completed ship block. Chung joined HHI in 1988 and is currently serving as a manager.

The management has stopped working on the work area and is investigating the accident. The accident occurred as the Ministry of Employment and Labor has been conducting regular safety checks on all HHI operations since April 20.

On Feb. 22, a subcontractor worker who was manufacturing a working foothold structure fell from a height of 21 meters and died.

An HHI official said, "We will make every effort to prevent a recurrence by actively cooperating with the investigation and implementing a company-wide safety check."
