Thirty-five last reinstated workers of Ssangyong Motor, who were ordered to take a leave of absence indefinitely after their reinstatement in January this year, went to work at Ssangyong Motor's plant in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, on May 4.

Forty-seven people were originally supposed to go to work, but 12 extended their leave of absence until the end of the year due to personal reasons.

On their way to work after 10 years and 11 months, which seemed unlikely to come, the reinstated workers looked tired as if they had stayed up all night, but their expressions looked brighter than ever.

Previously reinstated colleagues said, "We've been waiting for a long time. We are happy to be with you," while holding a banner reading " We are happy to be with you."

"I stayed up all night," said Kim Deuk-joong, head of Ssangyong Motor's branch at a press conference before going to work. "On my way back to work, I came back after a really long time."

He added, "Every time my colleagues return to work, they said, 'We will adapt quickly as our sense of production lines still remains at the fingertips of our hands.' Lastly, we will also adapt quickly and make a good car to repay the people."

As the last reinstated workers went to work on the same day, the Ssangyong Motor incident, triggered by the layoffs in April 2009, ended in just 11 years.

Starting with the reinstatement of 454 unpaid leave workers in 2013, Ssangyong has continued to reinstate them whenever their business conditions improved.

Since then, in September 2018, the four-party representatives of the labor, labor, management and the government have agreed to reinstate laid-off workers, and in December of the same year, they have implemented additional reinstatement for 60 percent of those who are eligible to reinstate laid-off workers to cope with additional labor shortages. In the first half of last year, the company completed the reinstatement of the remaining personnel.

However, as business conditions worsened this year, Ssangyong Motor notified a "paid leave" that would give 70 percent of its ordinary wage to those who returned to work back last year.

In response, laid-off reinstatement workers were also at odds with the company by submitting an application for relief from unfair leave of absence to Gyeonggi Provincial Labor Relations Commission.

However, as labor and management reached a final agreement after a four-party committee on win-win development, it was decided on May 1 that all of the last laid-off reinstated workers will be assigned to the department. After two months of OJT and work training, they will be deployed on site on July 1.

However, Ssangyong Motor's future is not so bright. Since late last year, the company has already been pushing for high-intensity management reform measures, including the return of wages for all employees and the implementation of a circular sabbatical system for office workers.

Recently, the crisis has intensified as its parent company, India's Mahindra, withdrew its 230 billion won ($188.5 million) investment plan.
