SK Telecom plans to introduce the world's first edge cloud service based on 5G Mobile Edge Computing within this year through cooperation with Amazon Web Services (AWS), an official of SK Telecom said on May 13.

Yoo Young-sang, head of SK Telecom's MNO business division, said in a keynote speech at the AWS Summit Online Korea (AWS Summit), "The B2B market is undergoing a major change due to the combination of telecommunication services and clouds."

He announced, "SK Telecom will launch the world's best 5G edge cloud within this year through cooperation with AWS and lead innovation based on global cooperation."

The AWS Summit is a world-renowned event in which companies from Asia-Pacific countries such as Korea, Australia and New Zealand, the United States and Canada, ASEAN, and India share the latest information on cloud and best practices for commercialization, and this time, it was held online in the aftermath of COVID-19.

SK Telecom is planning to build a 5G edge cloud ecosystem by combining public cloud technologies and services such as AWS Wavelength with the world's best 5G MEC technology.

5G edge cloud service based on 5G Mobile Edge Computing

5G edge cloud is a distributed cloud service that dramatically reduces the physical time and distance required to process data by installing cloud data centers at exchange stations and base stations to handle soaring mobile data at the edge of the network.

5G edge cloud, which is equipped with SK Telecom's MEC technology, can reduce communication delays by up to 60 percent, and provides cloud services to users on the move through handover technology without interruption.

It is expected that 5G edge cloud will be incorporated into various industries in the future and become a key component of industry innovation as well as improving cloud efficiency.

To that end, SK Telecom will build an MEC infrastructure in 12 major 5G strongholds across the country to provide shared public edge services used together by a number of companies and onsite edge services exclusively for certain companies.

In addition, SK Telecom has been stepping up efforts to commercialize the 5G edge cloud by working extensively with developers, including its telecommunications services and technology-related open platforms such as T-Map and quantum cryptographic communication.
