Korea Expressway Corporation said on May 22 that it will carry out a $21 million project to design and supervise the construction of the "Nepal-Kathmandu-Terai Expressway."
The Kathmandu-Terai Expressway is a road linking south Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, to the planned site of Nijghad International Airport in Bara district in Nepal’s southern plains. There it will meet with the East-West (Mahendra) Highway of the country. The project costs about $3.5 billion.
The construction project will be carried out in a fast-track manner that will shorten the construction period by combining design and construction for 54 months. Korea Expressway Corporation will conduct design and design review and construction supervision.
Korea Expressway Corporation formed a "Team Korea" consortium and participated in the bidding. It was finally selected after competing with 22 global consortiums including Singapore, Australia and Spain.
Nepal is a mountainous country similar to Korea's, and has received good marks in comprehensive evaluation, including Korea Expressway Corporation's experience in building long tunnels and bridges and excellent design and supervision capabilities.
Korea Expressway Corporation has won 166 projects in 39 countries since 2005, and currently carries out 18 projects.
"We have secured global competitiveness through Korea Expressway Corporation's technology and private local networks," said Shin Yong-seok, head of the Korea Expressway Corporation's overseas business division. "We will continue to support Korean companies' overseas expansion and the government's overseas construction revitalization policy."
