SK Telecom and SM Entertainment performed a 3D mixed reality performance at Super Junior's online concert "Beyond LIVE" on May 31. The huge 3D image moved and talked to create surprise. The video was broadcast live to more than 123,000 online audiences worldwide. (Courtesy of SKT)

Popular group Super Junior took the stage for an online concert. When Choi Si-won was not seen among Super Junior members, the rest of the members rushed to find him. At this time, a huge image of Choi Si-won's 3D mixed reality, like a genie of lamp fairy, popped out from the back of the stage, filling the 12-meter-high concert hall, moving naturally and talking for 30 seconds. Choi impressed the audience with the message "No Challenge? No Change?"

SK Telecom has joined hands with SM Entertainment to present a 3D mixed reality performance at Super Junior's online concert. This is the first case of applying the content produced by "Jump Studio," a mixed reality production company, to online live performance since late April.

The 3D mixed-reality performance came as the two companies agreed to present new content based on the latest ICT technology to global audiences online.

The 3D mixed-reality performance came as the two companies agreed to present new content based on the latest ICT technology to global audiences online.

The world's first online-only paid concert "Beyond LIVE," introduced by SM Entertainment, is already gaining popularity around the world with popular groups such as TVXQ and SuperM participating.

Super Junior performed a series of hit songs, including Sorry, Sorry, Mr. Simple, for 130 minutes from 3 p.m. on May 31, and received enthusiastic responses, with the number of online audiences worldwide reaching 123,000.

SK Telecom completed 3D mixed reality content in just one day after filming Super Junior Choi with 106 cameras at the Jump Studio for an hour. By utilizing the Jump Studio's 3D modeling and animation technology, the 12-meter-long high-resolution mixed reality image was created to blend naturally with the actual concert hall.

Jump Studio can dramatically reduce the cost and duration of content creation by automating much of the manual processes of existing 3D modeling operations with AI, cloud, 3D processing and rendering technologies, which have also been shown in this work.

Experts were also satisfied with the mixed reality content. In fact, experts said that it is economical because the contents of the 3D mixed reality can be freely enlarged, reduced, and reproduced, which allows the creator to express a wide area of expression, and can be easily filmed in an indoor studio without using large-scale filming equipment.

SK Telecom is planning to continue to provide mixed reality content to B2B customers in various fields such as entertainment, advertising and games. It is also planning to greatly expand the experience of 5G customers' real-life media.

Lee Sung-soo, CEO of SM Entertainment, said, "Beyond the SUPER SHOW has provided viewers around the world with more abundant entertainment with state-of-the-art volumetric technology. We will continue to apply the new culture technology (CT) to the performance field and show more advanced online concerts."

Meanwhile, Jeon Jin-soo, head of SK Telecom's 5GX service business division, said, "We expect the number of areas that require mixed reality technology to increase rapidly in the era of untact. Mixed reality content will change the paradigm of entertainment such as performances, movies, and dramas."
