On July 13th, lawmakers Kim Jae-gyun of the Democratic Party, and Lee Myeong-gyu, of the Grand National Party, hosted a session in the National Assembly devoted to the study of the promotion of national 3D convergence industries, through forums and exhibitions.

The so-called 3D convergence industries and related devices (such as robots, medical machinery, smart cars etc) can result from new ideas and businesses building on existing 3D technologies. Gwangju and Daegu cities have been establishing connections between each city's relevant local businesses since December 2009.

Gwangju and Daegu cities have announced their "3D Convergence Promotion Strategy," the result of 5 rounds of talks and seminars investigating connections and relevant industries in the two cities, and finding practical strategies for promoting the drive.

Gwangju Mayor Kang Un-tae and Daegu Mayor Kim Beom-il will also sign a "Reciprocal Cooperation MOU," to help the joint-promotion of 3D convergence industries to run smoothly and effectively.

In particular, the deal focuses on cooperation between Gwangju's light and LED industries, and Daegu's IT industries. - the decisions will be based on industries with potential for future 3D-based development, to compete effectively in the global market

In addition, the inaugural "Korean 3D Convergence Industry Forum" will be jointly held by Gwangju and Daegu, to develop relevant business in the two cities through partnerships, so that the Gwangju-Daegu region can become the place to be for 3D convergence industry.

- on July 13th, a trial-run exhibition of 3D products and technologies opened, to provide better understanding of the 3D convergence concept, and a long-term development view.

3D convergence industries refers to new industries derived from the fusion of 3D technology with existing applications. It features a wide and diverse range of possibilities, by incorporating current and developing 3D moving-image technology into various fields.

One example is in the field of robotics: a 3D-enabled robot can perform keyhole surgery 30% faster, and with a 30 percent higher success rate than a standard 2D robot.

In particular, Gwangju's regional strategic industries, such as lighting, cars, home appliances, culture, design etc can be brought together, as 3D technology has high synergy in many areas and is expected to lead to the development of many new products.

Thus a combination of Gwangju and Daegu's key strengths, lighting and IT industries respectively, through 3D, will be the future driver to create new businesses and opportunities in the region.

- in fostering new growth and advancing the region, the two cities plan to share resources if needed, and create new businesses.

Accordingly, this will solve possible future food creation and youth unemployment problems, as well as make the regions the most cutting-edge in Korea.
- government will also offer research and development support, to promote the lighting- and IT-based 3D convergence industries

This business plans reflects the results of the last five rounds of seminars, and will promote convergence industries in Gwangju and Daegu to make the cities stand out from other regions.
- Interested companies should apply for a feasibility study this July, by submitting a 10-year business development plan covering 2012 to 2022.

Kim Jae-gyun and Lee Myeong-gyu said that: "[we will] do our utmost, together with local administration, to strive for a successful promotion of 3D industries, which will create new growth areas and stimulate regional development."
