SEOUL -- South Korea plans to inject up to 1.7 trillion won (USD 1.4 billion) in the next five years in a bid to become one of the top five leaders in the information technology (IT) convergence sector, the government said Wednesday.

The plan, outlined at a weekly economic policymaker meeting, calls for concerted research and development (R&D) support in sensors, computing, networking and actuating, which are the four main components of the cutting-edge industry.

This move might be seen as 'game on' for Smartgrid.   This sentiment is echoed by Smartgrid and electric vehicle pundits whom visited Seoul and Daejeon last week for a series of exhibitions and conferences.

Korea is seen as more easily updateable for the trial and innovation of Smartgrid related products and services said Pike Research's, expert in cleantech, John Gartner, while visiting a Smart Battery forum in Seoul.  It stands to reason that updating actions are likely to occur, though no absolute details on the research streams, beyond the four components of industry, for the government investment have been issued as yet.
